Abstract

A 10-week-old-female Rhodesian Ridgeback was referred for right pelvic limb lameness following a fall. A grade IV/VI left atrioventricular (AV) valve murmur and reduced femoral pulses were detected. On neurological examination the puppy was non-ambulatory paraparetic with evidence of sciatic nerve dysfunction on the right. The neuroanatomical localisation was L4-S1 spinal cord segments or bilateral lower motor neuron disease of the pelvic limbs. Self-inflicted trauma led to fracture of two digits on the right pelvic limb. Endocarditis involving the left AV valve and secondary aortic thromboembolism were found on ultrasound and confirmed on post-mortem examination as the cause of paraparesis.
