Objectives

Despite the imperative support and assessment that clinical supervisors provide to veterinary nursing students in clinical practice, very little is known about how clinical supervisors feel about their role. The aim of this study is to investigate the experiences of clinical supervisors and their perceptions of their role, in addition to the factors that affect them. Two key variables were analysed: confidence and role satisfaction. The former being explored in this article.



Methods

A survey containing 29 multiple choice, numerical, Likert response format or open questions regarding the perceptions and experiences of clinical supervisors was distributed via Facebook, through the BVNA and by direct email to RCVS Training Practices. The Study gained ethical approval from the SSREB committee at the Royal Veterinary College URN SR2020-022.



Results

A range of results were gained that would be beneficial for training providers, practices and clinical supervisors. Overall participants were confident as clinical supervisors, and their perception of their role was generally aligned to the profession's requirements. Areas that participants reported least confidence in, were areas which they would be expected to seek support with.
